As we wrap up the first quarter of the year, Schuylkill Community Action (SCA) is excited to share a look at the work happening across Schuylkill County, PA. From expanding outreach services to strengthening housing safety and connecting with future healthcare professionals, these past few months reflect our continued commitment to meeting community needs and creating opportunities for stability and growth.
Expanding Access: New Outreach Location in Tamaqua, PA
SCA is proud to expand its Outreach Program through a new location at the Tamaqua Financial Opportunity Center. This new space allows our team to better serve residents in the Tamaqua area by providing case management services closer to home.
Supporting Safe Homes: Lead Safety Training for Contractors
SCA recently hosted a free 8-hour Lead Repair, Renovation, and Painting (RRP) training for our Weatherization team and local contractors who work on homes throughout the county. Presented by Pennoni, the training focused on EPA-required lead-safe work practices for homes built before 1978.
By investing in this training, we are helping ensure that the professionals entering homes across our community are equipped to protect the health and safety of the families they serve. Participants shared their appreciation for both the quality of the training and the opportunity to receive certification at no cost.
Bridging Health and Community: Nursing Students Visit SCA
This quarter, SCA welcomed nursing students from Penn State Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing for hands-on learning experiences that explored how social services and healthcare intersect.
Throughout the day, students engaged with multiple program areas, gaining insight into how housing, food access, financial stability, and case management all play a role in overall health. These visits highlight the importance of addressing social determinants of health and help prepare future healthcare professionals to better serve their communities.
